2. What Service or Product Can I Sell Online? Sell Your Skills Online
The easiest way to begin online is to use the skills and experience you already have and offer them online or virtually.
So, if you are an accountant or teacher you can set up your own digital online platform where you use your current skills. Or you may be a Administrative Assistant or Artist – whatever your skill or experience you have you will be able to sell it online.
You can set your own prices, which will take into account setup, sales and marketing budgets as well as your living costs.
However, you do not have to rely on your previous work experiences if you want to work completely online.
3. Sell Your Knowledge and Expertise
2020 has seen huge online sales on interests and pursuits that were previously considered peripheral.
For example, did you know that pet care and pet products is one of the top online selling niches in 2020?
Similarly, preppers (people who prepare for national and international emergencies by stockpiling supplies) have seen a huge increase in popularity.
Wherever you live in the world you will have been touched by the Covid-19 Pandemic, and some of have had their lives completely turned upside down.
The effects of the Covid-19 virus have highlighted the fragility of our health, and our economies (and the efficacty of our political systems!)
So how does that affect you if you are not a pet lover or prepper?
Your hobbies and personal skills can be a source of inspiration and motivation for others. The most popular YouTube Videos for awhile this year were from home cookery demonstrators – as restaurants became unsafe and were shut down in 2020 millions more people learnt to cook.
You-tube channel content creators make a monthly revenue after their viewers reach a certain number, through advertising revenue.
Or you may prefer to talk about your expertise through a blog, which can also be monetized through advertising, eBooks and online courses.
4. Know Yourself Better
What you choose to do will depend on your personal strengths AND weaknesses. If you are an introvert you probably won’t want to share what you know on You-tube, but you may be happy to write a regular blog.
It’s important to use your strengths as well as your knowledge.
If you hate social media, for example, you may find it easier to hire an ads manager and social media manager and hand over the sales and marketing of your online business to someone else or an agency.
A good rule of thumb is “Can I talk about this topic or write about this topic for 6 months to a year without running out of ideas?”.

Once you have decided what product or service you want to offer, it’s time to research the market.
It may surprise you to find out how many people are offering something similar – however this is not a reason to not to do it. No-one will offer products or services in the way you will so you can then start to figure out what will make your product or service standout online.
Part of what distinguishes your service or digital product will be:
- How you present it – your offer
- How you present yourself – what’s your story (customers like to know)
- How you market
- Your Sales Strategy
6. Uncover Your Ideal Customers
You will also need to research who is likely to be interested in buying from you, and where they hang out online.
If you can work up a profile of who your Ideal Customer is, it will help you direct your marketing and sales towards them. For an online business launch to be successful all of your content – on social media and on your landing pages needs to appeal to your Ideal Customer.

7. FUTURE STEPS
Although all you need to learn about online business: setup, sales and marketing, can appear to be daunting when you start, it can be done.
You cannot however be one of the successful online entrepreneurs, earning good incomes every year, without starting the process.
However, even if you are on a budget, you should not hesitate to pay for the expertise you need – as you can save yourself months if not years if you do this. (I ignored this bit of advice when I started out and lived to regret it).
